Laura Iliescu, Manager of Patient Advocacy & Engagement, Center for Rare Diseases
Laura has had an interesting career and an adventurous life! Along every life step and career move, it’s clear that Laura seeks out the hard stuff. She’s driven by challenge and by immersing herself into situations that require her to think differently to solve unique challenges. It’s clear why Laura is passionate about the rare disease space when you hear about the trajectory of both her life and her career.
Laura’s career started in product marketing in the generics space, a role that required very clever marketing. She moved from generics to a product marketing role with Shire in the IBS space – her first time working on a chronic condition that impacts a patients’ quality of life. She then moved into the patient support materials field. Several other career moves and a move from Canada to Europe brought Laura to the Rare Disease space. She was impressed and drawn to what she called “excellence” within the space – the people, the work that they did - it was all at a high caliber that matched Laura’s passion and intelligence. She talked about the communities and people in the rare disease space who were doing incredible work to push for progress for their loved ones and for individuals they’ve never met who faced the same challenges. Laura was able to bring two synergistic perspectives to the Rare Disease community – pharma and patient advocacy.
